Behind the thoughts of the Social Network movie

In the movie Social Network Mark Zuckerberg's creative journey starts out with a face-matching program that he designed. It allowed the students to compare pictures of females from their school and rate them on who is most attractive. The program became extremely popular amongst the Harvard users and it began Marks fame. He emphasizes that the reason for the popularity of the face match was not because of the ability to judge girls on their looks but whether they were hot or not, but that everybody knew who the girls were. Simply knowing the girls that were shown created a personal interest in the game, an interest that was relatable to the users. He would later go on to implement a similar strategy into Facebook.
Facebook taps into the need for social acceptance. In the film, it was mentioned that users could only be a part of the Harvard conceptual site if they were part of the school. Mark goes on to explain that everyone could be a part of it with Facebook. It was already exclusive to people because they would need to be added as a friend to have access to their profile.
The importance of Facebook is having the option to show peoples status being single/in a relationship. In the movie, Mark states that it is important because it lets people know that others are available to hook up with(have sex). This goes back to instinctual behaviors of mates looking for partners. The implementation of a relationship status was placed on Facebook based on humans desires and needs.
An interesting thing that was brought up in the film was the hacking of school system to get photos for the face matching game. Facebook itself has been at the controversy of allowing people to access others identity without their permission. The images posted on Facebook are easily accessible and often give away the identification of users to the public.
“Questions about what social networks mean for personal privacy and security have been brought to a head by research at Carnegie Mellon University that shows that Facebook has essentially become a worldwide photo identification database.  Paired with related research, we’re looking at the prospect where good, bad and ugly actors will be able identify a face in a crowd and know sensitive personal information about that person.”
